The first step in controlling your diabetes is to keep track of your blood glucose level. I remember when I first started in nursing I met a man on the cardiac unit where I was working, he was in his mid forties. He had just suffered a silent heart attack, which is one of the complications of uncontrolled diabetes. His family doctor had diagnosed him with diabetes a few years before and told him not to worry about it, if he felt funny, he should eat something. Well that patient was not going to return to that doctor and thank heavens things have come a long way in controlling diabetes.
Your family doctor will have some helpful hints about monitoring your
low or high blood sugar, better known as hypoglycemia and
hyperglycemia. The doctor may even refer you to an endocrinologist to better control your disease.
A home Glucometer is the easiest way
to do home monitoring, and you can receive one free from your doctor, or ask your doctor to write you a prescription to attend a diabetic education class. If you get a prescription for this class most private health insurances and Medicare will pick up most of the cost. You will more than likely be able to get a free monitor at the class. These classes are held at most hospitals and are conducted by a certified diabetic educator, who is usually a nurse or a registered dietician
Home monitoring is very important, it is very important to keep your blood glucose level under tight control to prevent complications.
